During COVID restrictions, I saw a music video on BBC, where pop star, Becky Hill, performed a beautiful medley of her music in, of all places, her bedroom. At the beginning of the video, she takes a little breath to prepare herself for the performance. Of course, this technique is used by many people as they start a difficult challenge, especially in sports. But never before had I thought about what that little breath really means. And that generated a poem which I sent to her. I was very pleasantly surprised that she took the time to respond to me. She said, “hello!!! just wanted to say how beautiful ur poem was & thank you for sharing it with me, you’re very talented.” Needless to say, I was very flattered and it definitely made my day. Here’s the poem:
That Little Breath
In that little breath,
So insignificant to the eye.
A thousand dreams and hopes reside.
In that little breath,
Soft as a midnight sigh
The years of struggle cannot hide.
In that little breath,
The strength of soul beats on,
Never fear,
It will face the dawn.
Then,
That little breath is gone.
The first clear note rings true.
But that little breath,
That little breath,
Is always waiting…
For you.
If you haven’t heard any of Becky’s music, I highly recommend that you listen to some of it. In my opinion she has the best voice in all of pop music. Her range, control and power are absolutely stunning. Two songs that I would suggest are: “I could get used to this” (orchestral version) and “Space.”
All the best,
Paul.
