We’re looking at the global warming debate from the wrong point of view.
As almost everyone on the planet knows, there’s been a lot of very intense discussion back and forth about global warming. Is it real or not? The majority of climate scientists believe that warming is indeed occurring but there is a small contingent of very vocal opponents who believe it is not. These people are creating a distraction and causing the world to lose focus. And why? Because the science is not solid. After all, if science can’t accurately predict the weather next week, how could it possibly be able to forecast global temperatures fifty years into the future? This uncertainty drives the question, is global warming fake?
It hardly matters. We shouldn’t be concerned about whether we’re causing global warming or not causing global warming. What we should be concerned about is what happens if humanity picks one of those two views but in fact makes the wrong choice.
So let’s say we decide to believe that man-made global warming is occurring. What happens if we are wrong? What if there is no global warming? Then,
- We’ve created an alternative energy industry and ultimately hundreds of thousands of jobs worldwide for no good reason.
- We’ve reduced our usage of fossil fuels.
- We have cleaner air to breathe, which is very likely to contribute to a longer lifespan.
Or we decide to believe that man-made global warming is not occurring and therefore make no attempt to stop it. What happens if we are wrong?
- The oceans will rise many, many feet. If all the ice at the poles and mountaintops melted, the sea level would rise by 216 feet (66 meters) [Read The National Geographic Magazine, What the World Would Look Like if All the Ice Melted]. All beaches that we enjoy now will be gone. Many cities will be flooded, including parts of New York and Miami. Vast agricultural areas are destroyed.
- We will have increased conflicts as our enormous population struggles to find new space for those who have been displaced.
- Increased desertification.
- Increased violent weather.
- We will have decreased air quality, which almost certainly will reduce lifespan.
- Possibly the total destruction of Earth—scientists believe that Venus once had an earth-like atmosphere that was destroyed by a greenhouse effect. It’s conceivable that this could happen here. Have a look at a YouTube video by Stephen Hawking called, Earth could become like ‘sister planet’ Venus…
So on one hand, if climate scientists are wrong, we have:
- Created hundreds of thousands of jobs.
- Reduced our energy usage of fossil fuels (which, incidentally, we need for other human uses: oil for plastics and roads, coal for steel, etc.)
- Cleaner air.
On the other hand, if the “global warming is fake” believers are wrong, we have:
- Immense flooding, increased desertification, more violent and destructive weather, all of which have huge implications for mankind, including loss of property, loss of income, loss of life.
- Possibly the complete and utter destruction of Earth where the surface temperature ultimately reaches 900 degrees Fahrenheit (see Venus atmosphere – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus).
In summary, the effects, if we are wrong in our decision-making, are either: clean air, lots of jobs, less reliance on fossil fuels or…massive human misery and possibly the total destruction of Earth.
I know which one I’m picking.
All the best,
PG.
