Never Give Up On Our Humanity

It’s so easy to lose hope in humanity in this era of social media – where a story of a single horrible event can spread around the planet in a micro-second. It’s so easy to be dragged down by the seemingly endless bad news. It’s so easy to become depressed and think that there is no hope for the human race. But that is just plain wrong.

Our humanity, our caring for each other, is incredibly powerful and overwhelms every hateful, evil event that happens on this planet. Around the world acts of kindness occur, quite literally, continuously.

Every act of kindness validates our humanity, confirms our love for each other, refutes, smothers and destroys acts of hatred and evil.

Remember that billions of people sacrifice their time, their money, their health and sometimes their lives… for total strangers.

The next time you read or watch or hear of some terrible, evil incident that has occurred, STOP.

And think of this:

  • Almost one billion people volunteer in some capacity, that’s 1/5 of the entire adult population of the planet.
  • Billions and billions of dollars are donated to charities every single year.
  • Think that since 1990:
    • ¼ of the world has risen out of extreme poverty
    • The number of children dying is less than half of what it was.
  • In the last two hundred years, literacy has gone from approximately 10% of the population to 80%.
  • Global average life expectancy increased by 5.5 years between 2000 and 2016.
  • Think of all the people who get involved when they see someone who needs help. Think of those who run toward danger to save lives.
  • Think of the bravery of our support services: the women and men of the fire department, the police, the military and so relevant now… our health workers, people in the food industry, teachers and many others who continue to work in the face of grave danger from this virus. These people make sacrifices, take risks, Every… single… day. And some of them die. For us. For total strangers.

We have so much to be proud of, but it gets lost in social media when so many times, evil takes precedence.

Acts of kindness are played out every day, hour, minute and second on this Earth.

And that’s something worth remembering.

Never give up on our humanity.
